The Power of Talent:

How Local Skills Build a Stronger Community

When most people think about philanthropy, they picture a donation check. But increasingly, the most valuable gift someone can offer isn’t money: it’s what they’re good at.

LTHC Homeless Services has seen firsthand how the gift of talent transforms missions, stories, and outcomes. Whether it's leading a committee, designing communications, producing media, or simply applying years of experience to lift others: talent is philanthropy. And it’s one of the most meaningful ways to keep your giving local.

Putting My Passion to Work for a Purpose | Kat Boyer

Kat Boyer has volunteered in our kitchen on Thursdays; but when a call went out for members to join the Communications Committee, she immediately raised her hand. Why? Because she had a skill and she saw where it could help.

“I’ve sat on a communications committee before and really enjoyed it. I also have a master’s in writing and a background in marketing, so I knew this was something I could contribute to.”

Kat’s return to writing with LTHC, interviewing an advocate for housing and homelessness, wasn’t just a skill refresh. It was a reconnection to purpose.

“Putting my craft toward advocacy and LTHC’s mission has been incredibly rewarding. Writing has always been a passion; but what drives it is the impact. Doing this for free, of my own will, feels deeply fulfilling.”

Kat’s story is a perfect example of individual talent philanthropy, channeling professional skills toward social good. And she’s not alone.

Using What I Have to Help | Ed Dunn

Ed Dunn’s relationship with LTHC began over 25 years ago after completing Leadership Lafayette. A fellow participant invited him to help with a fundraiser, and he’s been involved ever since.

“I had very little knowledge of homelessness when I started. Now, I’ve learned a copious amount, not just about LTHC’s work, but about what dignity really means.”

Ed brings his video production and leadership skills to LTHC, helping capture powerful stories and events that deepen understanding and drive support.

“Once you have a secure place to live, then you can begin to work on anything else. That’s what LTHC does. And if I can use my skills to help them tell that story, then I’ve done my part.”

His contributions exemplify why investing in skilled volunteers is so critical: they amplify impact and build community trust. You can see Ed's work for LTHC on our YouTube Channel.

Your Local Talent Matters More Than Ever

As service needs rise, foundational financial reserves are shrinking. For LTHC, local talent contributions, from committee leadership to video storytelling, aren’t just supportive, they’re essential bridges that plug gaps where funding falls short.

Philanthropy of talent, whether it’s donated or developed, keeps communities strong and resilient. In Greater Lafayette, we don’t wait for billionaires or distant foundations to “save” us. We lean on the incredible people who already live here.

And let’s be honest: we need to stop pretending that federal and state funding alone will ever be enough. Local problems require local people, doing what they do best, for the good of others.

Indiana is a state of traditions, but also full of communities in motion. We’re growing. We’re evolving. And how we communicate, collaborate, and lead must grow, too. That’s why investing local talent, through volunteering, mentorship, or professional development, is one of the most powerful ways to build a better future.

You don’t need a specific degree or a flashy title. If you have a skill and a heart to serve, LTHC has a place for you to use both. So, how about it - are you ready to share your skills?

Stay tuned for the final article in our series, where we’ll explore Treasure Philanthropy, and the many ways people turn financial gifts into community transformation.

Small gestures. Big dignity.

Bulk Buys for Our Fall Refresh

Providing care begins with the basics; because when you’re unhoused, even a simple hygiene kit can mean the difference between another hard day and a fresh start.

Our Day Resource Center and Night Shelter serve people year-round, not just during a crisis, not just in the cold. 365 days a year, no matter what, guests rely on us for showers, clean clothes, daily support, and dignity while they work toward long-term housing.

That means we don’t just ask for hygiene items once. We ask monthly because they’re used daily by 100+ individuals; and the need is growing with the number of guests.

If you’ve ever replaced your deodorant, run out of shampoo, or needed new socks, you know how easy it is to just go get more. Our guests don’t have that option. So, we keep asking; not to burden you, but to invite you into a smarter, more sustainable solution.

Here's what helps:

  • Travel-size body wash, shampoo, shaving cream, and deodorant
  • White socks (dye-free for sensitive skin)
  • Men’s & women’s underwear and sports bras (S, M, L, XL, 2XL)
  • Reusable rain ponchos, stretch belts, shoelaces, towels and hand warmers

Buying in bulk means fewer asks (and less noise in your inbox), more people helped, and better-prepared shelves when urgent needs arise, especially during seasonal transitions. Our needs lists may look different from time to time, and that’s because we work hard to stay ahead of urgency, not behind it.

If you’re someone who prefers giving items over money, or you’re looking to amplify your monthly donation, consider setting up a recurring in-kind bulk donation. Can't do it alone? No problem! 5 people chipping in $30/head can supply a 100-pack of shampoo, a 100-pack of body wash, and a 72-pack of deodorant. Grab 10 friends, and for $10 each you can provide 200 socks delivered right to our door.

Share, build and multiply the impact. This is how we meet the need together!

Whether it’s a single package or a group collection drive, your generosity fills gaps and hearts. Prefer to shop in person? Donations can be dropped off at Door #4 (off 13th Street) Monday through Friday, 9 AM–4 PM.

Meet Grace Listopad | Engagement Coordinator

Hi!

My name is Grace, and I’m excited to serve as the new Engagement Coordinator at LTHC Homeless Services.

I recently graduated from Northern Michigan University in the Upper Peninsula with a degree in Sustainable Business and Enterprise Creation, a unique blend of business, environmental science, and economics. In my role at LTHC, I work closely with volunteers and donors, oversee our household donations room, and step in wherever support is needed across the organization.

Although I’ve only been here for a short time, I already feel a strong sense of belonging. My passion for supporting individuals experiencing homelessness began at a young age. Growing up near Chicago, I witnessed firsthand the harsh realities of living outside during both sweltering summers and freezing winters.

When I was around 10 or 11, I dreamed up Happy Trailers, a fleet of retrofitted RVs offering essential services like showers, clean clothes, dental care, and access to case managers for individuals experiencing homelessness in the Chicagoland area. While that idea hasn't become a reality yet, it's still a dream I hope to bring to life someday.

At 17, I launched a community initiative called Pack Up Homelessness. With the help of my community, I collected over 7,000 items and packed 108 care bags on my 18th birthday with my family and friends.

Joining the LTHC team feels like a natural next step, and I’m looking forward to continuing to make a meaningful impact in the Greater Lafayette community.

For all volunteer and in-kind donation opportunities, contact Grace at (765) 423-4880 ext 4081, or by email at glistopad@lthc.net

One Night. One Purpose.

On Friday, November 21, 2025, something luminous will take place at The Stables Event Center; a night not just of celebration, but of storytelling, connection, and commitment to the belief that no one should be left in the dark.

LTHC’s 2nd Annual Home for the Holidays Gala is more than a fundraiser, it’s a movement. A movement that raised over $212,000 last year to support individuals, families, and veterans on their journey from crisis to stability.

This year’s event will feature a chef-crafted dinner, curated wine and beer, a silent auction full of exclusive experiences, and compelling voices from across our community, all illuminating the path toward housing, dignity, and hope.

Tickets go on sale October 1. This is your last reminder to mark the date. Get a little fancy. Invite a friend. And help us light the way forward.

Because when we turn the light on for someone else…we light up Lafayette and change lives!

Join the Home for Keeps Giving Club

When you give $5 a week, or $260 a year, you’re doing more than supporting LTHC’s core mission. You’re helping someone hold onto hope.

The Home for Keeps Club recognizes donors who choose to go a little deeper, a little longer, to ensure that housing solutions are always within reach. As a member, you’ll receive special updates on how your generosity is creating lasting change.

Already give monthly? You may already qualify. Thinking about leveling up? Now’s a great time to grow your impact.

Give or increase your gift to join the Home for Keeps Club.

Your steady support means that when someone says, “I need help,” we can say, “We’re here.” No matter the amount, your commitment carries lives forward.

Set up a monthly gift and become a Housing Hero today.
