The Gift of Treasure

Anchoring Hope in Hometown Success

Philanthropy isn’t simply about generosity; it’s about trust in a mission, especially in a time when trust in institutions feels fragile. The gift of treasure isn’t about the size of your check. It’s about the promise behind it: that you care, and that you trust your care will turn into action.

We know the national headlines: a “generosity crisis,” fewer everyday donors, more reliance on a handful of big funders. Rising costs, political gridlock, and economic anxiety are leaving nonprofits stretched thinner than ever. And still the needs in our community grow.

What is "Treasure" And Why Does It Matter?

Here’s the truth: treasure isn’t always money. It’s in-kind donations and monthly giving, stock gifts, or legacy planning. It’s whatever you give, sized by your ability, and multiplied by community. And if you’re asking what your treasure is helping us achieve, we welcome that question, because we’re proud of the answer. Mission, vision, values, and local goals - treasure equals unity and trust.

That’s why local giving always makes the strongest impact. Because you're not funding some distant initiative or national campaign; your dollars are not being managed by people who you'll never meet or share in your Hoosier pride. You’re keeping seniors off the streets, helping veterans stabilize, and ensuring families have a warm place to land, right here in Greater Lafayette.

Giving feels harder right now. Inflation, uncertainty, and political exhaustion are draining both wallets and attention. People are asking themselves, Can I give? Should I give? And if so, who do I trust with my treasure? Some fear their donation is too small to matter. Some worry about overhead and whether their gift gets lost in admin. Some are overwhelmed by causes and crisis fatigue. Some say, “I gave already… what else are you asking for?”

Treasure In Action

Despite the myth, LTHC does not have millions of dollars sitting in a bank vault like Scrooge McDuck from DuckTales. And though it would be thrilling to be the focus of a Mission: Impossible plot, you'll notice nonprofits are not highly-valued international heist priorities. Put simply - the treasure you give isn't stagnant. It moves our mission daily.

Your gift becomes a month of housing for a veteran who served with honor; furniture and essentials for a family finally moving out of shelter; medical respite supplies to triage those living with chronic illness or recovering from surgery without a home; daily meals for 100-120 people; and yes, onsite staff, housing coordinators, and front-line workers who also have families and homes to manage. The transaction is straight-forward: your gift = we fulfill our mission to house people.

LTHC is one part of a local continuum of care, and your treasure keeps that continuum from collapsing.

We’re entering a season when everyone (individuals, foundations, corporations) is evaluating what they can give. And this isn't the first time we've all had this shared experience. Meanwhile, the national story paints a tough picture:

  • The number of Americans who give to charity continues to decline.
  • Small donor counts are shrinking, while reliance on large donors is growing.
  • Economic uncertainty is expected to slow end-of-year giving again in 2025.

Philanthropy will always exist because need will always exist. Treasure isn’t just about funding a budget. It’s about fueling a mission, and trusting LTHC to steward your gift with integrity, impact, and care. We always have. And with the continued gift of treasure, we always will.
